Music of the Night

This is another of my early poems.  (No relation to "Phantom of the Opera," I had never heard of that song when I titled the poem!)  For anyone who is interested, it was inspired by Madeline L'Engle, specifically "A Wind in the Door."

Music blending beautifully, played by all creation.

Melody, harmony, all as one, free from devastation.

Listen as their chorus sounds. Star, planet, galaxy plays its part.

An endless beauty fills the night, yet brings bitter sorrow to the heart

As one by on the stars go dim swallowed up by evilness.

The music fades but still plays strong the songs that many will miss

For on the earth, darkness prevails. Crime, greed overpowering good.

The music is lost in the sounds of the dark. Not many listen the way they should.

The stars still sing with all their being, willing what they see to be false.

And those that understand the wrong join in the heavens loss.

With each piece of hate put into our hearts another star gives up its place.

It becomes one with us, to join our fight, sacrificed to save the human race.

The death of a star fades the song. One by one they all go out.

Slowly the melody stops. Evil gives an almighty shout.

It has won the battle, but not the war for as each star gives up its life

The force of good becomes stronger still. The song is dimly heard in the night.

Each day new stars are born. The melody slowly gains strength.

Others listen to the song, add their beings to the ranks.

At the beginning all seemed lost, but hope is always strong in heart.

As long as those willing stay to fight the end shall never reach the start.

When all seems lost in this bitter world and darkness threatens to swallow up right,

Keep hope in your heart, for it shall prevail, and sing to the songs played through the night.
